Scoured by an occasional creek fed by the thunder-burst squalls that are a frequent occurrence here, this rock reveals an aspect of the power in this place that is sometimes hidden. These layers of limestone were laid down at the bottom of shallow sea a very long time ago. They have been rotated about one-hundred-twenty degrees. What is on the right of this picture started as the bottom and what is on the left in this picture started on the top.
Consider that this block of limestone several hundred feet thick and possibly miles across was upended by the forces generated by heat rising from the center of the earth and driving plate tectonics.

Energy is more prevalent and easier for many organisms to acquire at interfaces. The sea shore is a land-sea-air double interface. Lots of energy and a healthy shore teams with life.

A triple blow-back
 • AMS_7236-Edit-1
A single blow-back spout.
Imagine what this would do to an open boat.
I have to suspect that the pressure that generates this sort of thing is pretty high and wears rapidly on the surface of the rock, not to mention the fracture forces it probably generates

Only the occasional wave was high enough to break over these rocks
